The Benefits of Desexing Your Pet: What to Expect Before and After Surgery

At Mowbray VeterinaryClinic, we understand that deciding to desex your pet is an important
step in their lifelong health and wellbeing. Desexing (also called neutering or spaying) is a
routine surgery that provides many benefits for both pets and their owners. Here’s what you
need to know about why desexing matters, and how to care for your pet before and after
their procedure.

Why Desex Your Pet?

  1. Health benefits
Reduces the risk of certain cancers, such as mammary cancer in females and testicular
    cancer in males.
Helps prevent life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra) in female pets.
Can reduce the risk of prostate problems in males.
  2. Behavioural benefits
Can lessen roaming tendencies, lowering the chance of accidents or getting lost.
Helps reduce urine marking and spraying.
May reduce aggressive behaviour linked to mating instincts.
  3. Community benefits
Prevents unwanted litters, helping to reduce the number of homeless pets in the community.

Before the Procedure:

To make the process as smooth as possible for you and your pet:

Fasting: Your pet will usually need to fast the night before surgery. Our team will let you
know exactly when to remove food and water.
Health check: We will perform a pre-surgery examination to ensure your pet is fit for
anaesthesia.
Comfort: Bring your pet in a secure carrier or on a lead for safety.
Calm environment: Staying relaxed helps your pet feel less anxious, so try to keep your
routine calm on the morning of surgery.

After the Procedure:

Your pet will need rest and care as they recover. Here’s how you can help:

Quiet rest: Give them a warm, quiet space away from other pets and children for the first few
days.
Monitor the wound: Check the incision daily for redness, swelling, or discharge, and let us
know if you notice anything unusual.
Limit activity: Avoid running, jumping, or rough play for around 10–14 days to allow proper
healing.
Follow-up visit: We’ll schedule a check-up to ensure your pet is healing well and to remove
stitches if necessary.
