What pre-surgery questions should I ask my veterinarian?

When preparing your pet for surgery, it is important to ask your veterinarian key questions to ensure you fully understand the procedure, risks, and post-operative care. We always encourage our clients to ask questions to get a better understanding.

Here are essential pre-surgery questions to ask and discuss with our vets before procedures:

  • What is the exact diagnosis, and why is surgery needed? Sometimes, conditions and the necessity for surgery need to be explained in simple terms so there is a clear understanding.
  • Is the surgery urgent, or can it be delayed safely? Are there risks if we wait?
  • What type of surgery will be performed? Are there alternative treatments or procedures available?
  • What will happen during the surgery? How long will it take? Will anesthesia be used, and how safe is it for my pet’s age and health?
  • What are the possible risks and complications from the surgery?
  • Are pre-surgery tests such as bloodwork, x-rays, or ultrasounds needed? How do these tests improve the diagnosis of my pet?
  • Should I withhold food or medications before surgery? When exactly should fasting start?
  • What preparations should I make at home before and after surgery? Should I bathe my pet or limit their activity?
  • What post-operative care and medications will be necessary? How should I care for bandages or wounds?
  • Will my pet need protective gear like a cone to prevent licking wounds, and for how long?
  • When can my pet resume normal activities?
  • Is there a follow-up appointment needed or scheduled?
  • What are the expected costs, and do you offer payment plans or pet insurance advice?

Asking these questions provides clarity, reassurance, and helps you plan for the best outcome and recovery for your pet at Mowbray Veterinary Clinic.
